Are unsafe storage charges pending?

An embarassing situation for a police officer in Ontario.

A 16-year-old student at a Kitchener high school has been charged after an undercover agent’s backpack, which contained his sidearm and other police equipment, was stolen. The male student has been charged with possession of a weapon obtained by crime. He cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Last week, the backpack was taken after an officer set it down and crossed a street near the high school. He and his partner were investigating an incident. When the officer returned shortly after, the backpack was gone. The high school was locked down as part of a neighbourhood search. The backpack has not been recovered.

I don’t suppose there will be any unsafe storage charges laid in this case, seeing it was a trained professional who left his backpack containing the gun laying on the street.
