P.M. Shuffles His Cabinet

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made some major changes in the federal cabinet, no doubt in anticipation of a spring election.

The move of Rona Ambrose from Minister of Environment to Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification had been predicted by pundits for some time. I always felt that she had been given an impossible role to fill with no visible support from the PMO. She was pretty much a stationary target. The appointment of John Baird as the new Minister of Environment may signal a significant move by the government to put a new (and real) priority on the environment portfolio.

I certainly wasn’t unhappy to see Vic Toews moved out of Justice. For a government that at least paid lip service to the problems inherent in the Liberal’s gun control program Toews didn’t appear to be reading from the same playbook. Hopefully Robert Nicholson as the new Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of Canada will make inroads in convincing the bureaucrats in Justice that they are no longer tasked to move forward with the old Liberal government’s gun control program.
